The name of UOIT has been a mouthful for 16 years, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, or UOIT for short, and that’s about to change. The university’s Executive Director of Communications and Marketing Richard Seres says they want to have a simpler identity for the university. “The official name always has been and always will be the University of Ontario Institute of Technology,” explained Seres. “However, what we’ll be known as, in terms of a shorter name that people can remember, and refer to us more easily, is a name like what we’ve proposed.” Seres says they believe Ontario Tech University will put them on a much bigger stage.

 

“This is an effort to do a better job with our branding so that’s it’s easier for people to know who we are and know more about us and be interested in finding out more.”

This is something they’ve been working on for a while. “The first time you introduce the institution it’s awkward and it’s difficult to say and with the short name, UOIT, it has a lot of challenges itself with a number of vowels that are all there, it’s a challenging moniker to say.” Seres adds this is not unique to them.“A lot of universities have had the same challenge,” said Seres. “For example, Western, which is officially the University of Western Ontario, Virginia Tech is actually the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
