Founded in 1887 by Catholic bishops, CUA is not only a papal institution but one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the United States. The CUA at the service of the Pope has been visited at least 3 times; John Paul II in 1979, Benedict XVI in 2008, and Francis I in 2015. Pope Francis canonized Junipero Serra on campus, the first such event on U.S. soil.
